This has been a pretty rough year so far, but it has brought everyone closer together. Without my brothers (and Momma Bear) I wouldn’t be the person I am today. We all have our differences but at the end of the day we are a family and I wouldn’t trade a single one of my brothers for anything.

Developing a Developer: A code to live by.

Since I graduated school and started working, a lot of what I do has shifted from being a designer to a developer. Since I’m 90% sure this is where I am taking my career I’ve started to learn more-and-more code as the weeks of 2011 progress. Starting with Flash/ActionScript 3.0 where I’ve been perfecting such ground breaking code as stop() and goToAndPlay(), and now have completed my first working Flash page! (applause)

Along with the spirit of learning new things I’ve made it my goal to learn everything there is to know about HTML5 before it is recommended by the WC3 so according to ishtml5readyyet.com I have until my 33rd birthday to fully learn everything that HTML5 has to offer. Thanks to Lynda.com and some down time at work I’m able to get a jump start on HTMl5 and soon CSS3.

Anyone reading this have any experience with coding HTML5? I had done a bit of it when I was in school but since it doesn’t work with Internet Explorer at all we haven’t focused too much.

Tri-Angle

So I’ve recently decided that triangle is the best shape. I don’t have a lot of evidence to back up this argument so you’ll just need to take my word for it. Here are some of my favourite triangles.

All-Seeing Eye: I believe it has something to do with my weird obsession with Free Masonry or the fact that it just looks cool.. (or maybe because of all the Villains gear Jay makes at www.wearevillains.com).

Triforce: From what some would say is the best video game series of all time the triforce is just awesome.

Sandwiches (not pictured): Who doesn’t love a good sandwich (cut in half of course, that’s a triangle, right?)

309 Days

So it has been 309 days since my last blog post, I’m not sure why I stopped but it could have had something to do with the fact it was no longer mandatory for my class. A lot has happened in the last 309 days so I’ll recap a bit of it (Sorry that this one is more personal than nonsensical, the rest will be filled with more things about bears and clothes).

I graduated from Interactive Multimedia Development at Algonquin College. Between my last blog post and my graduation I was placed at Wunderman Toronto as a Junior Digital Art Director and had an amazing time working there, thanks to Helen Prokos for being such a great mentor.

After a brief stint of unemployement (where I should have been posting on my blog) I got a job in my hometown of Burlington, Ontario working as a Brand Developer for a studio named Incipit where I work on web related things.

In November of last year I finally upgraded my system and now I have a 27″ iMac + my 21″ LG monitor but even after months of having it I haven’t installed any of my design software!

*Yes that is World of Warcraft, but I don’t play anymore.

Anyway, I’m going to try and keep my blog up to date more since other than work I don’t do much these days.

(I don’t know who I’m talking to, I don’t think anyone is still subscribed. Maybe I should post another picture of Amanda Bynes in Maxim like I did months ago)

Norml Clothing – Ottawa

I’ve got precious few days left out here in Ottawa then I’m packing up and shipping myself back to Toronto. If there is one thing I’m going to miss it is going to be Norml Clothing on Rideau St downtown Ottawa. They have an amazing layout, host amazing events, and have some gnarly gear in one store which I haven’t been able to find in the Toronto area. They are launching their new web store soon so go check out their stuff.

Four Year Strong

So March 9th marked the day of the new Four Year Strong album titled “Enemy of the World” which is their first album since September 2007 when they released “Rise or Die Trying”. If you’re into melodic hardcore or “pop-punk with breakdowns” and you haven’t listened to FYS then you better get out there and get on it. I haven’t been this stoked on an album since A Day to Remember released their new album last year.

Top 5 bears of all time.

I’m not sure when it started, but I’ve grown obsessed with bears and I decided I would rank some of my favourite bears of all time. Rating each based on different aspects such as educational value, attitude and general feeling of badassery. The views in this post are strictly of the author and do not reflect those of anyone else, so I fully expect people not to agree but that is okay.

Starting from the 5th place spot,

#5 – Smokey Bear

Smokey Bear, often referred to as “Smokey the Bear” is the mascot of the United States Forest Service and created to educate children on the dangers of forest fires. Being Canadian I didn’t have a lot of direct exposure to this specific bear but his general aura of badassery commands respect!

#4 – Paddington Brown

Dating back to 1958 this well mannered, marmalade sandwich loving, anthropomorphised bear was a staple of my childhood with his polite misadventures. An immigrant from Peru adopted by the Brown family and given the moniker Paddington because of the railway station he was found in. Since Paddington’s creation in the late 1950′s the books have been translated into 30 languages and his adventures have been shared the world over, earning him spot #4.

#3 – Baloo

The sleepy brown bear from the classic The Jungle Book is a mentor to the man-cub Mowgli through this epic tale while they encounter snakes and apes pushing forward through song and keeping Mowgli in line with corporal punishment. One of my favourite Disney characters he has been found in a few of their pictures, one of which he is the animal rendition of Robin Hood where he plays the character of Little John (it isn’t official that it is him, but we all know it is).

#2 – Yogi bear (ft. Booboo)

Apparently 1958 was the year of the bear, not only was Paddington created this year but so were these 2 bears, Yogi and Booboo. The trouble makers of Jellystone Park make sure no picnic basket is safe within it’s confines. Not only is he a badass picnic basket bandit, he has the females on lock down with his girlfriend Cindy Bear. This Hanna-Barbera produced cartoon was a part of my weekend routine for years.

#1 – Fozzie Bear

Wocka Wocka Wocka, finally we get to my favourite bear of all time, The Muppet’s own Fozzie Bear. Often the target of ridicule from the geezers in the balcony, Statler and Waldorf, and rotten tomatoes for his jokes. Playing a major role in a lot of the Muppet classics like A Muppet Family Christmas, and Muppet Treasure island he is hilarious and in my mind the best bear ever.

So I know there are a lot of bears that I didn’t bring attention to in my post, but that’s okay, if they were truly badass they don’t need validation from me. However I would like to give an honourable mention to the terrifying hairless bear (pictured below) because his look is straight up horrible.

So next week marks the final week of my term at school and this term is the last of my program so after next Friday I will be free from post-secondary education. This also means I have to find a job and start being an.. adult i guess. Since it is time to find a job I had to finish my CV and my portfolio which surprisingly I’ve done. I’ve had the ownership of www.danmorton.ca for a while but it’s sort of just been floating there in cyber space so now is the time to fill it up. There are a few examples of work there now and they’ll be updated soon. Also since I’ve been trying to get all this stuff up and running I haven’t been faithful to ol’ wordpress but don’t worry, I’m going to try and stay more active with my blog.
