Ever since I started getting into design I have always been intrigued by typography, but more recently I’ve been really looking into typefaces.  Subscribing to design sites on my Google reader such as Abduzeedo, Webdesigner Depot and Smashing Magazine where on a daily basis I get to see the buzz on typography, design and insight into the industry is really increasing my love for typography.

In 2007 Gary Hustwit released the documentary titled simply ‘Helvetica‘ and it goes in depth into the history of the font and shows how often you see the font without really noticing. I highly recommend that people who are interested in design to check it out.

In August of 2009 I picked up a book entitled Typeface: Classic Typography for Contemporary Design and I use it almost every week when I’m in need of inspiration for type in my design. If you’ve got a few bucks to spend or you’re looking for a good book on typography I recommend checking this out.

I started research for working in a retro style for a project I’m going to be directing so to test out some colour schemes I’ve decided to do a test image based around the word “SENSES” which is the theme of our project. I’ve had a lot of fun trying to work in a retro style so I’m looking forward to this project for the rest of the semester.

My main source of inspiration for this test piece was from a fellow classmate, as well as the DVNO video by Justice.

When working I like to find some good songs to keep me calm and inspire some of my work. After being exposed to John Legend from the song “Heartbreaker” by MSTRKRFT ft. John Legend I did a little more searching for some of John’s songs and I found this song which really helps me work.

I hope you enjoy his music as much as I do and you should check out John’s albums “Get Lifted”, “Once Again” and “Evolver”.

So last summer myself and a good friend of mine, Mark Butterworth, started talking about doing some design work to start potentially releasing some articles of clothing. We have similar taste in clothes and some pretty good ideas (in our opinions) but time constraints seems to have won for the mean time but I’m not giving up yet, and neither is mark. Hopefully before this summer we have some solid designs done and some stuff sent off to the printer.

Just a quick preview of what I’ve been working on, it’s called “The Clock”. The full logo that refuses to upload itself will be up soon, it’s similar to the logo up top on my blog.

Soon myself, and Mark will be posting some full works for Halfwits, and perhaps just a few side projects we’d like to share with the internet.

January dawns the start of a new decade and I decided to make a few reasonable resolutions this year. To help me keep track of those resolutions I’m starting this blog. “Doin’ Work” is simply going to be a place for me to post things I’m working on, things that help me work, and things I stumble upon while procrastinating the work that I should be doing. I’m aiming to post at least 3 things a week (Hopefully Monday/Wednesday/Friday). Hopefully I can pick up a few friends along the way if people seem to vibe with what I’m throwing out there.

So even though it’s later on in January I feel it is a good time to start it up.
